Moving to the suburbs did not dispel my desire to replicate a semblance of our former urban lifestyle — minus the excruciating process of securing a spot in a good New York City school. I never had any intention of leaving the city. After all, my husband and I rented a 2,500 square foot three-bedroom on the Upper West Side just doors down from a top public school. Times changed when my son was diagnosed with sensory processing disorder and we quickly found ourselves a classic Colonial oasis in Fairfield, Conn. It was very hard for me to leave so my enlarged photograph of Times Square placed in our powder room helped me feel like I was making a statement. Funny that I should choose a location I did everything to avoid when I was a city resident. Our very first morning in our new home, my son sat at the kitchen table, surrounded by sunlight and the sounds of silence while eating his Cheerios in complete bliss. It was that moment I knew we made the right decision.
To celebrate our love of modern design, we partnered with Sellars Lathrop Architecture (who ironically lived in our exact same apartment building years earlier) to create an element of surprise that exists beyond the perfectly symmetrical front entrance. The clean lines and minimalism bring serenity to a home filled with little people. As we look out our windows to views of children on bikes, we have no regrets.
